Ford is making a calculated bet on affordable electric trucks with the debut of the Fathom, a new electric pickup that will carry a starting price of $28,000 — a figure that positions it well below many competitors in the growing EV segment and within reach of a broader swath of American truck buyers.

Perhaps more significant than the price point is the platform underneath the Fathom. The vehicle is the first to roll off Ford's so-called Universal Electric Vehicle architecture, a foundational engineering framework the automaker has identified as central to its strategy for finally turning a profit on electric vehicles.
